Understanding the Different Types of Therapy
-
Individual psychoanalysis or psychotherapy (therapy) is a form of talk therapy focused on gaining an in-depth of understanding of oneself to achieve greater self-awareness. It incorporates explorations of why things happen in your life, which often relate to your past. In individual therapy, your therapist provides a safe space where you can feel understood and have the opportunity to freely explore your mind, your feelings about yourself, and your feelings about the world around you. Individual therapy helps you cope with (and process) hardship and allows you to find clarity and direction. You will learn to understand yourself better so you can get more of what you want out of life.

Therapy groups are ideal for individuals who want to explore and improve their interpersonal relationships. These groups help members better understand the impact they have on others and how they are perceived. By learning to express thoughts and feelings in the moment, members develop deeper self-awareness and stronger communication skills.
Group members come from diverse backgrounds and engage in open, honest conversations about emotionally meaningful aspects of their lives. This “here-and-now” focus allows for real-time insight into relationship patterns while telling the emotionally significant story of your life.
Psychodynamic groups are especially helpful for people who feel misunderstood, experience conflict in friendships, familial relationships, or romantic relationships, or struggle with interpersonal issues at work. With the guidance of a skilled therapist, members gain support, feedback, and the opportunity to practice healthier ways of relating to others. Group work is also a useful supplement to deepen one's individual treatment.
Our therapists have advanced training in group therapy.

Couples therapy helps couples understand each other better and develop more empathy for each other’s experiences, both in the relationship and in the world around them. It is ideal for couples who are struggling to get along and for couples who want to take proactive steps to protect their relationships in both good times and more challenging times. It is especially helpful for couples enduring loss, experiencing hardships, commencing fertility treatments, or want to prioritize the protection of their relationship amidst the uncertainty of new parenthood. Sometimes when one member of a couple is reluctant to enter individual therapy, couples therapy can be a useful tool.

Support groups are typically formed around a shared topic (such as new parenthood or loss) and help people manage complex feelings, build community and validate their experiences. Support groups incorporate at least some psychoeducation to help contextualize one’s experience in connection with the shared topic with the flexibility to connect over other parts of oneself as well.
